Celitement receives material efficiency prize of the BMWi

The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), with its environmentally friendly and energy-saving cement Celitement one of the winners of the German Materials Efficiency Prize of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi). Compared with conventional methods for cement production promises to be this huge energy savings kit development and a much more favorable energy balance. With the price recorded at the State Secretary Jochen Homann 17.11. four medium-sized companies and a research facility for their innovative ideas and processes from. The KIT was awarded for his applied research to improve material efficiency.

State Secretary Jochen Homann gave the award at the conference "with resource efficiency on the road to victory - Practice and research show the way". On the part of KIT were contrary to the Vice President for Research and Innovation, Dr. Peter Fritz, and Dr. Peter Stemmermann from the four-member team of inventors Celitement the 10,000 Euro award. "The Material Efficiency Award shows us that we are in the development of Celitement on the right track and how pioneering this innovation is now energy-intensive process in cement production," said Dr. Peter Fritz.

The previously used portland cement is the world's largest amount used in industrial product and consumed in the production and processing also huge resources of limestone and gypsum. "In the production of Celitement we need only about a third of the amount of lime and we can dispense entirely on interground plaster", scholars Dr. Peter Stemmermann one of the advantages of the resource-saving cement.

Celitement also requires from today's perspective, only half as much energy in production and are in production compared to previous methods, probably only half as much carbon dioxide into the environment. Celitement is now being further developed by the Celitement GmbH, a spin of the four inventors of the industrial partner of KIT and Schwenk Zement KG.

"Green" Cement Celitement wants smaller "ecological footprints" left

"Celitement has the potential to replace the long term in large areas of the conventional cement," Dr. Hanns-Günther Mayer, a managing director of Celitement GmbH is convinced. So far, the KIT-Scientists have Celitement produced at laboratory scale. After more than a year of intensive and successful testing establishes the Celitement GmbH currently on the North Campus of KIT, a pilot plant with an investment of five million euros. As of spring 2011, the pilot plant daily 100 kilograms "Celitement" will match. "This is the next step on the way to market the eco-friendly cement," says Mayer - see also the article "climate-friendly cement Celitement gets pilot plant" of 08/24/2010.

The annual award of the German Materials Efficiency Prize promotes the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology for the economically and environmentally beneficial effects of material efficiency. Five technically advanced products, processes or services will be awarded € 10,000 each.
